The Centre for Instrumentation Services (CIS) is deeply involved in providing technical advice and assistance to the Tertiary Education Institutions (TEIs) in areas pertaining to Instrumentation and Information Technology. Some of these institutions do not possess appropriate expertise in the above fields and as a result approach the CIS for relevant support.

The services provided in this context include:

• Participating in design of new projects (Both Instrumentation & IT)
• Providing advice and assistance in the implementation of such projects
• Formulation of specifications for procurement of equipment and perform commissioning
• Participating in Bid Evaluation Committees (Most of them chaired by Head CIS)
• Providing advice & support regarding network technologies
• Ensuring optimum use of resources by carrying out surveys and making appropriate recommendations

Some of the main projects in which the CIS has been involved till now are :

Networking

1. Implementation of a Local Area Network (LAN) at TEC
2. Complete restructuring of the Local Area Networks of the MIE including implementation of an ISA Server
3. Design and implementation of a Computer Lab using wireless network technologies for the MIE
4. Design of a wireless Computer Lab for the Distance Education (DE) Centre of the MIE and implementation of a Web Server for accessing online courses
5. Upgrading of LAN & Computer systems at TEC
6. Installation of 2 additional servers at TEC in order to improve network performance & security.

Web Design & Software Development

1. Implementation of website for the Tertiary Education Commission
2. Implementation of website for the Human Resource, Knowledge and Arts Development Fund (HR KADF)
3. Implementation of a Student Scholarship Scheme database for the Human Resource, Knowledge and Arts Development Funds
4. Implementation of a Student Record Database for the MIE
5. Upgrading of Time Attendance Software at TEC
6. Implementation of a Payroll system for TEC
7. Design & Implementation of a New Website for TEC

Optimising use of Resources

The above projects were implemented to provide technological support to classrooms in view of enhancing teaching and learning in the TEIs. Each classroom is now equipped with a RGB projector screen and a Computer System. The CIS was involved in the preparation and evaluation of the Tender documents. Furthermore, implementation monitoring and sign off of the project were also carried out by the CIS.
